DONALD TRUMP JUST BANNED TRANSGENDER PEOPLE FROM SERVING IN THE US MILITARY

Donald Trump has just announced via Twitter (of all places) that transgender people won’t be allowed to go into the US military due to the amount it would cost them in medical bills.

In 2016, the Independent Rand Corporation said there were about 2,450 transgender active-duty service members in the military, out of 1.2 million. Which means thousands of transgender soldiers have already been risking their lives for their country.

Only to now be told that their community will now be banned from service.

Imagine if this announcement had been made about all those who had a health condition which required long-term medical treatment? That wouldn’t be seen as acceptable, and Trump probably wouldn’t dare to do it. It should be no less acceptable to ban transgender people who may require long-term hormone treatment.

The fact that one of the most powerful rulers in the world has singled out the transgender community as “disruptive” and “costly”, and has no qualms about publically announcing that they’ll be banned from pursuing a certain career just for their gender identification goes to show that, no matter how far we might have come in recent years, people are still getting away with discriminating against them.

Plus, if the President of the United States publically discriminates against the transgender community, many more may start to feel like this sort of behaviour is justified.

We need world leaders to promote acceptance and support for the LGBT community, who’ve suffered for a long time at the hands of discrimination, in order for us all to continue to make positive steps towards equality and justice.
