ROBOTS CAN PLAY MARIO KART NOW AND THEY’D PROBABLY BEAT US TBH

Run to the hills, the machines are here to take over and enslave all us puny, fleshy humans! Oh, no, wait, actually they’re pretty chill and just want to play Mario Kart with us! At least, that’s what one artificial intelligence has just done.

One smart robot was able to play Mario Kart 64, keeping on the track and racing the course. You can watch a video of the AI in action and even see its ‘brain’ working as it ‘thinks’ to keep going around the track.

The AI is pretty good at keeping Mario on the Luigi Raceway track, but not robo-perfect. It makes mistakes, slipping off and bumping into sides… just like us!

To be exact, a neural network, created by programmer Kevin Hughes, was what reached a level of ability good enough to keep Mario flying around in his go kart.

So how did Hughes do it? He used open source machine learning software TensorFlow along with 20-minutes of training data. It was then able to handle the Luigi Raceway but even more impressive, it could play on *Royal Raceway*, which it WASN’T TRAINED FOR.

If the self-driving autonomous cars of the future are anywhere near as smart as this we’re looking forward to our future cab rides being SUPER FUN. And filled with mushrooms. Lots of mushrooms.
