Real love knows no boundaries, and John Legend has beautifully encapsulated that in his new video for Surefire.

Get ready to ugly cry. John Legend celebrates love that has no boundaries with his new video for Surefire, which is a part of his recent album Darkness and Light. Directed by Cole Wiley, the clip follows two young lovers—Roberto and Jamila, who continuously face social and cultural obstacles that hinder their relationship. Jamila gets bullied for her headscarf, and after an altercation with her disapproving father, Roberto is taken away by immigration officials and deported to Mexico. Jamila then hitchhikes to Mexico in search of her boyfriend and after much scouring around, she finally finds him.

Legends’ single highlights the current problems faced by immigrants in the United States, such as racism, Islamophobia, and deportation. With Trump’s administration passing some highly controversial laws, the video shines a glimmer of hope for all those facing tough times.

In the end, we see Jamila and Roberto’s parents come together, and give their consent to the star-crossed lovers, before standing in front of a huge wall, which is a not-so-subtle hint at Trump’s plan to build a wall around Mexico. A tear-jerking end to a very moving video.
